Principles for Magna Carta's sitsfest
What is a sitsfest?
Sitsfest refers to an academic table party where participants sing songs from a songbook, eat, drink, and have fun together. Magna organises both BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) and bar sitsfests, with the option to choose a non-alcohol version of the ticket when purchasing it. While sitsfests are often associated with alcohol, participation in the event does not require alcohol consumption. Bringing your own drinks is prohibited for bar sitsfests. Sitsfests often have various themes, and participants may dress according to the theme. There may also be theme-related competitions or tasks. Sitsfests are typically led by toastmasters, who manage the flow of the event, allocate speaking turns, and ensure the smooth progression of the event. The word of the toastmaster is considered law.
When signing up for Magna Carta’s event, it is possible to inform the organisers for example about anxiety, accessibility concerns, or any other topic you might find necessary.
Practices at Magna's Sitsfest that Magna’s toastmasters have agreed to follow:
Magna's sitsfest principles
- Alcohol is not a punishment.
- Do not pressure anyone to consume alcohol.
- The use of smartphones is forbidden, for everyone deserves to feel comfortable without the fear of being filmed. Filming of any sort is prohibited.
- Bathroom breaks are allowed during sitsfests without separate permission. Please inform the ones sitting close to you if you are going to the bathroom. You may leave between songs, not during speeches.
- The right to refuse punishment is acknowledged. However, this should not be abused.
- Everyone is equal. There is always a trusted person present at the event, whom participants can contact if needed during or after the event. The contact information for the trusted person is available in the event description and they are introduced at the beginning of the event.
- Seat preferences are not accepted at sitsfests without a compelling reason.
