The student association of the English students of the University of Jyväskylä first saw the light of day in 1958, when it went by the name “English Club”. Later on it was renamed to Magna Carta, by which name it has gone by to this very day. The name originally refers to the charter of English liberties granted by King John under threat of civil war in 1215. The following words from the scripture we still hold as our Holy Law: “No freemen shall be… imprisoned or disseised… except by the lawful judgement of his peers or by the law of the land.” Our mission is to add a little spice to the lives of English students in the form of various activities and services aimed to improve the general quality of life of English students, and act as a discussion forum as well as a link between the staff and the students of the English department. Magna Carta aims to enable and encourage the advancement of English students’ studies and social lives in the parameters of the association. In addition to this, Magna Carta maintains relations with JYY and other student associations.
